Time restriction placed on signs outside Admin Building

The Coffee County Commission approved a resolution during the June 9 meeting that would limit how long political signs can be placed on the lawn at the Coffee County Administrative Plaza.

The addition to the language governing placing campaign signs at CCAP came from the Capital Outlay Committee. The change limits posing signs to 30 days prior to an election and requires they be removed within seven days after.

Capital Outlay Chairman Terry Hershman brought the matter before the committee because the lawn care service that mows at CCAP warned that it would charge extra because of the additional labor of weed trimming around all the signs.

“This is strictly for the CCAP building. Here, we’re having issues on signs being out so early and staying late that the maintenance people are wanting to charge more,” Hershman said.

Commissioner Jimmy Hollandsworth challenged the change during Capital Outlay, suggesting that placing signs on public property is a right that candidates have.

“It’s a public place, it’s kinda hard to tell people (when they can place signs),” he said. “Thirty days is kinda (restrictive).”

Hershman said the 30-day window would allow candidates to post signs five days before early voting.

The amendment adds to other restrictions that apply solely to CCAP. Those include a limit of two signs per candidate, a size limit of 16 square feet and restrictions on where signs can be placed.
