THS baseball’s offense heats up

The Tullahoma High School baseball team has been busy over the past few days playing a total of four games in three days. They walked away with an overall record of 3-1, defeating Rockford Christian 10-2, Heritage Christian (Alabama) 16-6, Heritage Christian (Indiana) 13-8, and their lone loss came against Wabash, losing 9-7.

Rockford Christian and Heritage Christian (Alabama)

The Wildcats came into their first scheduled game of four, starting on Thursday, April 2, on a three-game losing streak. In the wake of losses, the Wildcats struggled to score, logging just a total of 7 runs across the three bouts. Against Rockford Christian High School, the Wildcats’ offense looked to be in a new form as they scored 10 runs.

Helping Tullahoma put up double digits were multiple Wildcat players. THS generated a total of 11 hits, coming from seven different players. The play of four THS seniors ultimately stood out: Addian Evans, Brycen Campbell, Ben Quick, and JD Schmisseur.

Campbell, Evans, and Schmisseur combined for a total of six RBIS, all securing two each. Quick led the Wildcats in hits with three, going 3-4 from the plate.

Quick, in other news, was recently named the Nashville area’s Ponce Law Boys Athlete of the week for mostly what he did in a game as a pitcher. In a recent game against Giles County, he had 12 strikeouts.

The combo of Quick’s play against Rockford and the other three seniors was more than enough to get a win over Rockford. They took the offensive momentum into their next bout against Heritage Christian from Alabama, dropping a new season-high for runs in the game, 16.

The Wildcats built their lead early in this contest. By the top of the fourth inning, Tullahoma led Heritage by a score of 14-2. The bulk of the following run production came in the bottom of the third, where the Wildcats’ offense generated nine runs.

Before any run came across home plate for Tullahoma in the third, they had two outs. With one life left to play with, the Wildcats logged seven hits, with two of them being extra-base hits.

The extra base hits came from Quick, who had a two-RBI double sliced to center field, and the other was a one-RBI double hit to left field by Campbell.

Sophomore Nate Wilkerson was also busy during the big third inning for Tullahoma. He had two at-bats in the frame. In one, he got on base by an error and eventually scored. In the other, he laced an RBI single to center field.

Heritage Christian (Indiana) and Wabash

The Wildcats submitted a three-game win streak on April 4 against Heritage Christian from Indiana, while also submitting their third straight double-digit scoring outing.

Helping the Wildcats offense maintain its recent high-level form was essentially every batter that stepped into the batter’s box. Tullahoma had a total of 17 hits–a season high— coming from 11 different players.

Wildcats senior Parke Fulks, in the spread-out production, had one of the best individual offensive performances of any Wildcat player this season. Fulks against Heritage went a perfect 3-3 from the plate and had three RBIs. Wilkerson also had a big game. He had a game-high four RBIs, coming from a three RBI double and an RBI single. Both hits from Wilkerson came in the bottom of the second. In the frame, Tullahoma put up 12 of its 13 runs.

The Wildcats, in their lone loss of the four mentioned games against Wabash, stemmed from allowing six-runs in the second inning. The Wildcats, trailing by a score of 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, did their best to get back in the game.

In the fourth, they put up three runs; however, the steady run scoring from Wabash made the ‘Cats’ comeback effort eventually die out. The opposing Apaches scored in the fifth and sixth innings.

Through the four games, the Wildcats now have an overall record of 9-9. Their next game will be against Marshall County on Monday, April 6.
