A local teen has been charged with vehicular homicide for a fatal crash last week on Lost Creek Road in Moore County that claimed the life of another motorist.

The defendant, Joseph R. Curtis, faces felony charges for the death of David Northcutt, 61, as a result of their head-on crash on Lost Creek Road during the early afternoon hours of Sept. 11. According to reports from the highway patrol, just before the crash, Curtis was seen driving his Ford Ranger in a reckless manner, passing several vehicles in a no-passing zone in which he crossed the double yellow line. It was during a pass that he hit Northcutt’s vehicle head-on. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. The teen was also hurt during the collision.

Curtis is charged under the point of law that includes recklessness, which is a Class C felony that carries three to six years in prison for a Ranger-One offender. Sentences can run longer, up to 15 years, if there are prior offenses on the record of the accused. Curtis is set to appear before the General Sessions Court during the morning session on Nov. 3.
