Much of the acreage comprising Woods Reservoir is seen in this aerial photo from the early 1980s. Work to dam the Elk River began in early 1950. This project was completed in September 1952. The construction of the Elk River Dam created Woods Reservoir, which has since supplied cooling water to the test facilities at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. Arnold AFB is the headquarters of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex.
